CRC proposal (#39)

  1. Three whole terms are most important in scheduling the sequence demands of science students. I hope CRC will give serious consideration to a calendar system of three 50-day class terms or a quarter system. Having twelve registrations for science students increases the chances considerably that they can participate in the wonderful programs that Furman has to offer like study abroad or the Washington Program.
  1. Fewer courses at one time facilitate learning and allows more efficient use of facilities. If we had only eight registrations, students would be doing more at the same time, would find it more difficult to be away a term, and more labs would be required for simultaneous rather than staggered use.
  2. The uniqueness of our current system provides a market advantage . . . we are not like all the others, and we have good reasons for being different.
  3. Our educational system has not been static since its inception. It is dynamic; it has the flexibility for change and adding new programs and courses as has been amply demonstrated over the years.
  4. Consider the reasons that we are ranked as high as we are especially given the fact that our endowment per student is among the lowest. I think it has everything to do with our current educational program. A high-level team from Hamilton College visited us this summer to learn about our program and to incorporate certain features since they had heard so much about our strength and reputation. Hamilton College in Clinton New York ranks about 14th on the US News scale.
  5. Students, even Furman students, benefit by the strong direction and requirements of our GER, otherwise these wonderful 18-20-year-olds would follow the path of least resistance. They need our wisdom prescribed in specific form for educational and intellectual advancement. Our current record in this regard is excellent. Don't weaken GER, strengthen it!
  6. The "J" term is a complete farce , don't go there.
  7. Continue to require religion, MFL, HES, and add philosophy. More and more our entering students have increasing amounts of college credits. Lets inspire them by increasing requirements not leaving them to drift at such a formative and vulnerable stage of their life.
