Study Abroad in Versailles, France

The Furman Fall in Versailles program has been in existence for over three decades. It offers homestay and a series of private courses offered in Versailles, France, one of the most historically significant sites in Europe. Versailles provides a unique social milieu within a half-hour's train trip from Paris.

Furman's Versailles program offers a core curriculum in French language, literature, culture and architectural history (listed in the Furman University Catalog as FRN-301, 310, 320, 325) for a total of 16 credit hours. Courses will be taught in French by native instructors or by the resident Furman faculty. Lodging with families in Versailles includes demi-pension (evening meal five days per week and continental breakfast daily).

A required orientation program will be provided at Furman during the semester preceding departure. Furman scholarships are normally prorated for the term abroad at approximately 50%.

Courses:

French 301: Language. To accommodate the proficiency level of the student; this course is required of all participants.
French 310: Literature. Modern French Drama with required attendance at theatrical events.
French 320: Civilization. History and art; this course makes use of resources in the area (museums, field trips, etc.)
French 325: Architecture. French architecture in historical context with site visits all over France.

Travel Opportunities:

A. Ten days to two weeks for independent travel at the student's own expense after completing the program.
B. Weekend excursions to nearby places of interest
C. Ten-day travel-study excursions in various regions of France

Costs:

The comprehensive fee for the program is expected to be close to the regular Furman fee, and includes tuition for four courses, roundtrip transportation from Atlanta, lodging with demi-pension, and group excursions. Students and parents will receive a specific quotation before any binding commitments are made.

Extra Expenses:

A. Travel to and from Atlanta
B. Books, independent travel, all lunches and some dinners, and other personal expenses. The amount needed depends on individual tastes.
