Spanish Study Away
Chile (Spring Semester)

Applications now being accepted for Spring 2011.
Deadline: January 29, 2010

Santiago is a thriving and modern Latin American capital that is an ideal home for study away immersion programs. Students spend 15 weeks in Santiago studying at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC), one of Latin America's most prestigious universities. Students live with Chilean families. In addition to several weekend or one-day excursions to locales in and around Santiago, the program includes one week-long excursion to the north of Chile and one week-long excursion to the south. Past trips to the north have included the dry northern Atacama desert region; trips to the south have included northern Patagonia, the lake district in the southern Andes, and the picturesque mountain town of Bariloche, Argentina.

Program highlights:

  • extended home stay with Chilean families make this program a true immersion experience
  • a variety of program activities that immerse participants in the thriving cultural and artistic life of Santiago
  • each student is afforded the opportunity to work closely with thoroughly vetted native Chilean instructors for three of the four courses (the Furman professor teaches the fourth course)
  • a hefty travel itinerary in and around Santiago and throughout northern and southern Chile
  • the tutores program, which connects each Furman student with a PUC student, who in turn coordinates a variety of tours and cultural visits throughout Santiago
  • the opportunity to envision and execute a research project in a field that interests the student and engages him/her in some element of Santiago's culture (as part of SPN 470)
  • students commute to the PUC for class every Monday-Thursday; there are several free weekends in which students may conduct independent travel to locales of interest

Students enroll in the following four courses:

  • SPN 301: Travel Study in Spanish Language. An advanced language course that deals with oral and written communicative strategies. Select grammar topics are covered. Level is determined by a placement exam and an oral interview before the program begins. The PUC can accommodate students of any level and can divide the group as needed.
  • SPN 350: Travel Study in Contemporary Spanish American Culture. This course uses film, newspaper and other media, and tours of Santiago to provide students with an in-depth examination of contemporary Chilean culture. Themes include, among others, the family, religion, the education system, race and ethnicity, gender, social class.
  • SPN 340: Travel Study in Spanish American Literature. This course is a survey of Chilean literature of all genres including poetry, short story, novel, drama and essay.
  • SPN 470: Senior Seminar in Spanish. Taught by the Furman instructor, this course comprises two functions. First, weekly meetings provide students with the opportunity to explore a variety of themes and are the forum in which program business is conducted. Second, this course provides students with the opportunity to envision, develop, and execute a lengthy research project (which includes an eight-page essay) on a topic of their choosing. The last third of the course is dedicated to workshops on and presentations of the projects.
